About

I’m Dr Kate Tangri, Clinical Psychologist for 13 years and mum of two boys.

I am the founder of Forest Psychology, a therapy and coaching practice in north-east London which supports mums and dads with the challenges associated with becoming a parent. As a mum to two young children myself, I am acutely aware that parenting can be demanding, overwhelming and emotionally and physically exhausting. Becoming a parent can also result in you losing sight of your own sense of identity, wants and needs. When social media is full of photos of happy parents and smiling children, it can be hard to admit that being a parent is not necessarily what you expected, and there may be aspects you find hard. Therapy and coaching can help you navigate these challenges, work through your difficulties and rediscover your sense of self.

Prior to setting up Forest Psychology, I worked for many years in specialist NHS perinatal and parental mental health services across London. I have supported mums and dads with a range of issues including adjustment to parenthood, bonding and attachment difficulties, changes in the couple relationship, birth trauma, postnatal anxiety and depression. I also specialise in working with parents who have experienced trauma and abuse in their own childhoods.

A few years ago I started mentoring other psychologists in the workplace. I enjoyed this work so much that this led to me training to become a coach. In my coaching practice I work with mothers who want to rediscover their identity and sense of self separate to being a parent, often with a plan of returning to the workplace after maternity leave or a career break.

For me, therapy and coaching is all about making positive change- big or small. How does change happen in our sessions? Well, our interactions in life are underpinned by mostly automatic ways of thinking, feeling and behaving- we are often acting on autopilot. Therapy can help bring awareness to these unconscious patterns of interaction and allows us to make sense of why we behave the way we do in life, and why we often find ourselves repeating the same patterns over and over. Once we are equipped with the knowledge of why we feel and behave the way we do, we then have the ability to choose our responses rather than react automatically in ways that aren’t always helpful.

If it sounds like we would be a good fit, email me on forestpsychology@proton.me or call 07442 380 981 to schedule a free discovery call.

*A quick note about my training. To call yourself a Clinical Psychologist in the UK you are required to have completed a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, and be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). I achieved my doctorate from the University of Leeds in 2009, and my HCPC registration is PYL24149. So if you choose to work with me, you can feel confident that you will be working with a highly experienced and registered Clinical Psychologist.

Approaches I Use In Therapy

  • Compassion-Focused Therapy

Compassion Focused Therapy is a particularly helpful approach for clients who experience high levels of shame and self-criticism

  • Systemic Therapy

Focuses on interactions and relationships between people, families and the wider community, rather than locating the problem in the individual

  • Attachment-Focused

Looks at the connection between a child’s early attachment experiences with their parents, and how they then go on to form relationships as an adult

  • EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is best known for treating PTSD but can also be used to alleviate other forms of distress
